Legislative Update

The final candidates’ list for the November general election has been posted. Go to www.georgiapta.org Capitol Watch. The Senate list reflects the outcome of the special primary on August 26 in Dist 13 to replace Joseph Carter who chose to run for a judgeship. Also posted is a story found on the web site of the Georgia Association of Education Leaders, GAEL, www.gael.org. It was written by Debra White, a former superintendent, who is also the Executive Director of the GA Association of Curriculum and Instructional Leaders, GACIS. The story is about the new method for calculating high school graduation rates expected to be implemented in Georgia for the Class of 2009. The 2008 graduation rate, not yet including summer school graduates, is 74.4%, up from 72.3% in 2007.–

Must Ministries in Need

We currently are in extreme need of canned food donations. We give out over 2,500 cans of food each day of the week and I am seeking to get the word out to the PTSA committee at each school. Currently the need is greater than ever and donations are down. Any help you could provide would be extremely appreciated.

There are two sample copies of SPLOST articles below: one Abby Shiffman and I worked on for the East Cobber that is general to Cobb County and one that schools can customize if they want with school specific information. Either can be used in newsletters or e-newsletters. Please distribute to your LUs. These are articles that can go in newsletters that go home on school buses. Healthy eating provides great benefits for our children’s learning process. A campaign has begun to promote healthy nutrition from a young age. We need to support our children with heathly eating behaviors at home and at school.

Leg Chairs and PTA Presidents:The following is in regards to how you go about making the motion to bring the SPLOST up for a vote at your PTA Meetings….

First, it helps if the Exec Bd passes it first. If not the Exec Bd then the Board of Directors should pass it prior to bringing it before the general membership.

All should have a copy of what their school will get out of the SPLOST if passed.That should be handed out with their agenda and a copy of the entire Resolution prior to the meeting so people may view it prior to it coming up for a vote.

Here is the verbage, if passed from the Board of Directors first, stating it came from the Legislation Committee President: “We have a motion from our Legislation Committee Chair to vote on the proposed Resolution before you to support SPLOST III, the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Being that it comes from Committee we do not need a Second. We will read the Resolved prior to any vote”

Preferably the person/chair making the motion will read the Resolved as it is written with their school PTA inserted in the appropriate spots.

” be it

Resolved, that the (INSERT YOUR SCHOOL HERE) PTA supports the continued use of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) to fund the construction of educational facilities, school renovations, technology and equipment, and other capital outlay needs; and be it further

Resolved, that the (INSERT YOUR SCHOOL HERE) PTA urges its members and the community to vote YES on the ballot question September 16, 2008, to reauthorize the SPLOST for the Cobb County and the Marietta City School Systems.”

President, “Are thee any questions? Discussion?” This is where you can also mention if your school got alot from the last SPLOST, ie Walton got 22 new classrooms, Sedalia Park got 12 additional classrooms with technology to go along with that new addition….etc…

Follow through with that first…..then proceed to the vote

“All those in favor of this Proposed Resolution say AYE, All those opposed say NAYThe ___________ (Aye’s, Nay’s) have it, the motion ______________ (passes, does not pass)” Please contact me if you have any additional questions.

Environmental Education Opportunity

Hello everyone! Hope you are enjoying these last couple of weeks of summer vacation. I am thrilled to be the new Environmental Education Chair for ECCC. I look forward to sharing program ideas with you at our Priority Fair in September.

I did want to go ahead and send the attached information from the Clean Air Schools No-Idle Program with you now. I had a great conversation with Susan Bacon, Director of Education for the program last week ago and she is thrilled with the opportunity to partner with schools in Cobb County. (One school in Cobb participated last year - Kincaid Elementary - so feel free to ask Amie how it went!)

Attached is a one pager about the No-Idle program, a one-pager about Clean Air Campaign components and a registration form. If your local unit is looking for an impactful Environmental Ed program, the No-Idle is a great one to consider. You will want to get your volunteers organized before or right as the school year begins. Susan is more than happy to answer questions and help in any way. (Her contact information is included.)

Couple of other things to keep in mind: the No-Idle Program helps your school administration with its environmental status reports. Clean Air’s lessons and programs are designed to meet Georgia curriculum standards (making it an easier sell when you talk with your administration and get their buy-in).

Susan plans to attend our Priority Fair on September 9 and will have additional information about the various Clean Air programs to share with us then.

Please be ready to start your school off right by scheduling your Consequences of Crime visit. This continues to be a successful event that stresses the importance of quality decision making. There are always consequences to our decisions. The goal is to teach children about bad choices and the consequences of those choices.
